Abstract

In the decomposition of alkali amalgams by water or an aqueous solution of an <PICT:0605339/III/1> <PICT:0605339/III/2> alkali hydroxide, the amalgam is flowed in a thin layer on a conducting and amalgamable surface in channels between elements of a catalyst which are upstanding from and in intimate and extended contact with the surface. A series of iron, copper, steel or other amalgamable metal troughs may be used comprising, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a rectangular flat plate a having the edges b slightly raised and the edge c bent downwardly. The catalyst in the form of a grid d is secured to the plate by means of bolts or screws e. A battery of such elements immersed in a tank of aqueous alkali hydroxide may be arranged so that the amalgam circulates in series, in parallel or in series-parallel, thereby reducing the bulkiness of the electrolytic cells. Specification 543,539 is referred to.
