Abstract
605,189. Detonation signalling; fuzes. JONES, E., LOWE, A. J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 6, 1944, No. 17086. [Class 9 (ii)] An explosive device for transmitting disturbances through water and producing a succession of detonations at predetermined intervals for marine signalling &c., comprises a series of units, each unit comprising a compressed charge 8a of a detonating explosive, on each side of which is a predetermined length of fuze 6 and 6a, a space being left between the terminal fuze lengths of adjacent units to prevent the device burning at too great a speed or disintegrating without ignition of the fuzes by the explosives. A further length 7 of fuze at one side of the explosive which burns at a slower rate than the fuzes 6, 6a allows the device to be ignited from either end to give a choice of two different rates of frequency of detonations. In the construction shown, a perforated metal cap 13 is arranged between the sleeves which also ensure the device burning normally and allows smaller spaces to be left between the sleeves. Each unit is housed in a sleeve 5. The sleeves are contained in a jointed tube 1. There are paper rings 9 between the tubes 1 and the sleeves 5 and a pliable water-proof cement between the sections of the tube 1. The device is ignited at one or both ends by a length of instantaneous fuze with a water-proof covering. The fuzes 6, 6a, 7 may be lead salts of polynitrophenalic compounds. The fuzes 6, 6a, may be gum arabic and basic lead 4: 6-dinitronesorcinate and the fuzes 7 may be gum arabic and basic lead 3: 5-dinitro-2-hydroxy toluene. The charge 8a may be lead azide, lead styphnate and aluminium powder.
