Abstract

541,202. Blasting; fuzes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. (Ensign-Bickford Co.). May 10, 1940, No. 8458. [Classes 9 (i), 9 (ii) and 68 (i)] A cord-like device suitable for igniting from a distant point the safety fuze or fuzes of a number of charges in mining operations or pyrotechnic displays whereby the charges may be exploded simultaneously or in a desired sequence comprises a pliable core adapted to maintain during combustion any shape into which it may previously have been bent, a layer of rapidly combustible material, a covering for this material exposing substantially uniformly spaced flame escape areas and an outer coating of waterproof material destructible by the combustion products. The device shown comprises a core 10 of tinned steel wire 10 having a covering of textile strands 12 secured by adhesive 11, a layer 13 of mealed black powder with a binder of nitrocellulose or a mixture of oxidizing and reducing agents yielding a flame but little or no gas. Over this are wound in opposite directions yarns 14 providing spaced exposed areas 15 of the layer 13 and the whole is coated with lacquer or wax 16. Stiffened asbestos may be substituted for the core 10, 12. The cord has a more rapid rate of burning than that of safety fuze. Fig. 2 shows the manner in which lengths 31 of the cord may be used to explode a number of charges disposed in holes 22 ... 27 in a mine face, in the order of the numerals attached to the holes by igniting the end of the single length leading to a remote point. The cord 31 is connected to lengths 29, 29<SP>1</SP> of safety fuze which as regards the charges 23 ... 27 extend into the charges but in the case of the charges 22 that are simultaneously exploded the customary detonators are omitted and lengths of detonating fuze 30 extend from the safety fuze 29<SP>1</SP> to the charge. The order in which the charges are fired is determined by the length of cords 31 and safety fuze.
