[Class 59] In a swing hammer mill, the material from the hopper 19 is fed by the screw 6 to the opening between renewable liners 28 on the sections 1, 5 of the upper part of the mill, the lower part being constituted by a half - cylindrical screen plate 8 flanged at 26 for rigidity, or by spaced parallel arcuate bars, spaced from the liners 28 by breaker bars 30. The hammers 32 are in the form of wedge-sectioned bars having short arms 34 at the ends, by which they are pivoted on rods 35 threaded through discs 37 on the' shaft 24 and retained in position by end discs, the holes in which are placed out of register with the rods 35 by turning the end discs on the shaft. The shaft 24 is driven by a motor 42 through a multiple-rope drive and the screw 6, which is detachably secured to a co-axial extension 6a by a pin 6c, is driven by a motor 13 on the part 1 of the mill. The whole apparatus is enclosed in a casing formed in two parts 17, 18, the hopper 19 being arranged beneath an opening 21 in the part 17. The power-absorption of the machine is reduced by preventing the entry of air to the mill, but if desired air or inert gas may be admitted through an opening, or openings, which are normally stopped by plugs 44. The cover part 17 is provided with an opening, to the outer air, covered with a perforated screen, and a motor driven fan 47 at the other end of the apparatus ventilates the space within the casing and maintains an even temperature.
