Abstract

604,595. Colour printing. KNIGHTSHADES, Ltd., BEMROSE & SONS, Ltd., WALKER, A., and ALDERSON, J. W. June 26; 1945, No. 16307. [Class 100(ii)] A process for applying decorative or other coloured designs to flexible transparent or translucent sheet material comprises first coating the sheet over the area to be enclosed by the outlines of the design with a continuous film of a white base by the photogravure printing process and then superimposing, also by the photogravure process, the colours to produce the design. A positive of the area to be underprinted in white is made by filling in such area with bleach or a celluloid overlay, this positive is printed on to carbon tissue, screened as with the screen of the drawing in which the shaded portions 1 are bounded by the transparent parts 2 and finally transferred to a copper plate or cylinder which is etched to a depth corresponding to just over half of the normal solid printing strength. The ink may be a normal photogravure white or may incorporate varnish so that the white film does not pull away when the colours of the design are overprinted. Process may be applied to oiled paper or card, or to white or water-white material and is used for production of lampshades.
