Abstract
In a method of concentrating oxidized iron ores from a quartz gangue, an aqueous pulp of the one is treated with an anionic collecting agent, consisting of a higher fatty acid or a soap thereof, a resin acid or a soap thereof or a mixture thereof, lime and an aqueous solution of starch treated to make it mixable with water, the duration of said treatment being such that the formation of dextrine is avoided, the treated pulp being then subjected to froth flotation to float off the gangue. The starch may be rendered mixable with water by boiling it with water, by treatment with aqueous caustic soda, an acid compound or an oxidizing compound in aqueous solution, examples of such compounds are given and include sulphuric, hydrochloric and nitric acids, potassium permanganate and sodium peroxide. The pulp may be agitated after the addition of each reagent and may be subjected to froth flotation after each addition. The pulp may be treated with starch, lime and collecting agent, then additional lime and collecting agent, and finally with collecting agent, each of the additions being followed by flotation to remove the gangue.
