Abstract

603,964. Rotary compressors. STEENSEN, S. J. Nov. 19, 1945, No. 31018. Convention date, April 29, 1942. [Class 110 (ii)] In a rotary compressor of the type in which a gyratory rotor makes moving contact with the peripheral wall of the chamber, the rotor is wholly or partly of magnetic material and is driven by means of one or more externally placed rotating magnets. The cylindrical wall 1 of the chamber is of non-magnetic material, such as bronze, and the two end walls, which may be of steel, are soldered in position. A fixed abutment 3 engages with a radial slot 7 in the gyratory piston 4. The latter is of magnetic material either wholly or at the periphery only and is driven by a rotating permanent magnet 8, the poles 13, 14 of which maintain a clearance of about 0.1 mm. with respect to the wall 1. A stationary pin 11 concentric with the wall 1 engages a bore 11<1> in the piston 4 to limit the pressure of the piston against the wall. The pin 11 may be omitted. The chamber and piston may be of non-circular shape. The permanent magnet may be replaced by an electromagnet. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the statement that the chamber and piston may be elliptical or ovate. The rotary magnet may be replaced by a number of stationary electromagnets arranged around the chamber and energized in successionso as to obtain a rotary magnetic field. In an alternative construction, the gyratory piston is replaced by a rotor of non-magnetic material mounted on a pin fixed eccentrically within the chamber and provided with radially sliding vanes of magnetic material which are acted upon by rotating magnets disposed outside the chamber. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
