[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XII] In a furnace having a mechanical stoker grate of the type wherein reciprocatory grate bars are moved in unison towards the firebridge and are returned in groups, the plate 2 which is positioned between the fuel supply hopper 4 and the grate 1 is arranged to be moved, immediately prior to the feeding movement of the grate, to allow a free flow of fuel on to the grate, the plate 2 being returned to its original position immediately after the feeding movement of the grate. As shown, the plate 2 is suspended by a link 5 from one end of an arm 6 on a pivot rod 6<1>. An arm 14 on the rod 6' engages a slot in a longitudinally slidable rod 8 which is reciprocated by an eccentric 9 on the motor-driven shaft 10 of the grate-reciprocating mechanism, or alternatively, by cam means. In a modification, the arm 14 is forked to engage between spaced collars on the rod 8. The rod 6<1> may be provided with an arm carrying a weight to counterbalance the plate 2, and the end of the rod is squared at 15 to receive a handle for manual operation. The plate 2 may be arranged to swing out of its normal position, instead of being slidable, and the swing may be effected bv a link connection with one of the bars of the grate.
