Abstract

603,156. Treating gases with liquids. MELVILL, F. L. Feb. 5, 1945, No. 2858. Convention date, Feb. 4, 1944. [Class 55(ii)] Packing 11 for gas or vapour and liquid contacting apparatus comprises a number of vertical sheets 17 made up of two or more layers 20 of straight slender elements 16 of which those in adjoining layers are vertically inclined in opposite directions and are in contact at the intersections 18 which lie in spaced horizontal and vertical rows the spaces being large enough to prevent filming of liquid thereacross. The elements may be wires, tubes, rods or strips or a number of wires braided or twisted or laid side by side. Straight or helical grooves may increase their liquid carrying capacity. The elements in the layers of each packing sheet may be interconnected as by welds 23 preferably on the upper side of some or all of the intersections; the meshes of all or alternate sheets may register and some sheets may be caused to vibrate.
