Abstract

602,715. Joint-making packing. GRAHAM, R. Nov. 10, 1945, No. 30101. [Class 122 (iii)] [Also in Group XVII] In a seal at the edges of a door, hatch or other closure member, a resilient sealing component and a substantially rigid mounting component form together a hollow structure having openings so positioned that, when the door, hatch or other closure member is shut and sealed by contact 'pressure of the sealing component, the interior of the structure is in communication with either the interior or exterior of the chamber, vessel or container to be closed, which ever is to be at the higher pressure so that on increase of pressure the sealing is improved accordingly. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the closure member 16 engages a sealing member 12 which bridges a mounting component 11 secured to the wall 13 of the vessel to be closed. The hollow structure formed by components 11, 12 is in communication with the high pressure in the vessel through the opening 17. The sealing member 12 may be replaced by a tubular seal of circular or " hour-glass " cross-section supported by a rigid casing and engaging a rib on the part to be closed.
