Abstract
602,474. Coke-ovens. KOPPERS CO., Inc. June 7, 1945, No. 14438. Convention date, Nov. 8, 1944. [Class 55(i)] The coking-chambers 10 of a coke-oven have side-walls 28 vertically disposed substantially throughout their height but which flare outwardly and then upwardly at a level 33 adjacent to the top of the combustion flues 11 to form a portion of the chamber having a greater horizontal cross-section area than the remainder and wherein the coking of the coal charge will be delayed owing to its greater width and resulting in cooler "tops." This upper portion of the coal charge may also have a higher moisture content and a higher bulk density than the lower portion of the charge.
