Abstract

1. Process for improving the quality, especially for increasing the content of volatile hydrocarbons, of the gas formed in the coking of mineral coal in horizontal-chamber coking furnaces, in which the gas is drawn off through the horizontally extending gas-collecting chamber remaining between furnace charge and coke furnace top and connected to the collecting main of the coke furnace battery, characterised in that the gas is drawn off at the same time also at the two ends of the coke furnace by way of vertical collecting chambers corresponding approximately to the volume of the gas-collecting chamber formed above the furnace charge, in such a way that the quantity of the gas which rises vertically upwards through the furnace charge and is drawn off through the horizontal gas-collecting passage is substantially reduced and the gas withdrawn at the ends of the furnace through the vertical collecting chambers is conducted away directly into the collecting main of the coke furnace battery.
