Abstract

602,234. Thermionic power converters. M-O VALVE CO., Ltd., and RAMSAY, H. T. Nov. 5, 1941, No. 14259. [Class 39 (i)] Thermionic gas - filled rectifiers having a solid thermionic cathode 1 separated from the anode 2 by a labyrinth passage, has a baffle electrode 11 disposed on the cathode side of a control electrode 5 ; during the blocking period, the negative potential of the control electrode 5 is greater than that of the baffle electrode so that the deionisation period may be lessened and incidental sputtering of the electrode 5 prevented from contaminating the cathode. For this purpose the bias battery 7 is connected to the baffle electrode 11 through a relatively high resistance 12 and to the control electrode through a choke 8 of relatively low resistance. The starting impulse may be applied to both electrodes by a pulse generator 9. In the arrangement shown, the cathode 1 is an oxidecoated ribbon directly heated ; the cathode space is surrounded by a metal cylinder 3 with restricted end 3<1> which supports by brackets and insulators 11<1> two cup-shaped metal members 4 carrying the control electrode 5. The baffle electrode 11 is also mounted on the cylindrical member 3, 3' by insulators 11<1>. The Provisional Specification also describes the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 in which 3 is a canister surrounding and connected to the cathode 1 ; auxiliary electrode is made up of the canister 4 round the anode 2 and a plate 5 covering a tube 6 projecting into the canister 3. The parts 4, 5, 6 are connected together and a maintained negative to the cathode by a battery 7 and choke 8. The discharge is started by a pulse from a generator 9 through a resistance 10 to auxiliary electrode.
