Abstract

601,228. Door-operating mechanism. SMART, G. R. Dec. 27, 1944, No. 25880. [Class 65 (i)] [Also in Group X] In a sliding door &c. having at least two skins, each skin comprising at least two panels (1, 2 and 3, 4 in Figs. 2 and 3) which are cross-coupled to form two pairs of movable panels (1, 4 and 3, 2), operating mechanism is provided to move the lights in each pair simultaneously and in opposite directions. This operating mechanism may be selective so as to move each pair of panels independently of the other. In the example shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which is described with reference to windows (see Group X), the panels slide horizontally and are cross-coupled in pairs by means of pulleys and cables. The operating mechanism selectively drives panels 1 and 3 by means of chains 23 and 19 (Fig. 62) passing over sprocketwheels 24 and 20, and connected by further pulleys and cables to the driven panels. The sprocket-wheels 20 and 24 are mounted on independent shafts 30 and 31 connected by chains and further sprocket-wheels with clutch members 27, 26 respectively, freely mounted on a shaft 25 rotated by an operating handle 15. Between the clutch members and engageable selectively therewith for operation of one or the other pair of panels, is a dog 28 splined on the shaft 25 and slidable thereon by a fingerpiece 34 which rotates a shaft 33. A follower 36 on the shaft coacts with a cam 37 and moves the shaft 33 axially, the clutch shifter 32 being correspondingly moved. In a modification, vertically sliding panels are similarly coupled, except that the lower ends of each pair of coupled panels are connected by chains passing over sprocket-wheels, and the coupling means are arranged on both sides of the panels. These sprocket-wheels are connected by further sprocket-wheels and chains to worm-wheels 64, 65 (Fig. 47), each of which is thus adapted to operate one pair of panels. In this case, the operating mechanism comprises corresponding worms 66, 67 respectively, which are freely mounted on a shaft 68 rotated by the operating handle 15, the shaft having two splined portions 69 and 70 adapted to engage selectively the worms 66 and 67, on moving the shaft endwise by means of the handle 15. Other arrangements of -panels are described and illustrated in which, e.g. more than two panels may be operated simultaneously by the same operating mechanism (see Group X). The operating mechanism may include a slipping clutch to prevent over-run, and the panels may be operated by remote control and actuated by a motor instead of by hand.
