Abstract

601,156. Differential and change speed gear ; claw clutches. TIMKEN-DETROIT AXLE CO. March 20, 1945, No. 6956. Convention date, March 11, 1944. [Class 80 (ii)] A two-speed drive-axle comprises an input shaft driving a transverse countershaft through a hypoid bevel gear, the countershaft transmitting the drive selectively at two speeds to the axle shafts through a differential gearing, the axes of the countershaft and the driving shaft being stepped successively higher than the axis of the axle shafts. A driving shaft 20 has an integral hypoid bevel pinion 36 meshing with a bevel gear 38 splined to a countershaft 40. The shaft 40 is mounted in the bearings 58, 60 in the main casing 48 and carries freely rotatable thereon the driving gears 80, 82 and a spring detent positioned dog clutch member 84 operated by a transverse rod 94. The internal spline teeth of the member 84 are of different thickness to provide an overlapping tooth lock under torque loaded conditions. The axle casing 30 is bolted to the main casing flange 189 and is dowelled to the bearing caps 174, 175 of the differential cage by the dowels 192, 194. The differential half cages 115, 117 which are of similar shape are clamped together by bolts which also secure the internal flanges of the driving gears 113, 114. The planet bevel gears 156, 158 are carried by a spider 148, and mesh with the side gears 130, 160 journalled in the differential cages. Lubrication passages are provided in the differential cage, main casing and nose casing. U.S.A. Specification 2,183,667 and Specification 574,883, [Group XXXI], are referred to.
