Abstract

600,910. Teaching radio navigation. LINK AVIATION DEVICES, Inc. March 20, 1944, Nos. 5191 and 5192. Convention dates, April 17, 1943, and May 27, 1943. [Class 40 (vii)] Apparatus associated with a grounded aviation trainer for teaching the use of radio navigation signals comprises a set of quadrants 28, 30, 32, 34 mounted below the recording desk 20 and excited with signals which simulate a field of the A-N overlapping-beam type, the recorder carrying an electrode 100 which picks up electrostatically signals representative of its position relative to the quadrants. The quadrants are bent downwardly to simulate the variation of intensity with distance and the edges of the quadrants bordering the openings 27 (which correspond to the equi-signal zones) are also bent downwardly to simulate the fall of intensity which normally occurs near such zones. The sudden increase of intensity when approaching the central cone of silence is simulated by rods 142 extending into the desk top 20 and the cone of silence is simulated due to opposite quadrants of each pair being excited in phase opposition. The excitation of the quadrants may be effected by a generator 38 producing a radio-frequency modulated by an audio-frequency in which case electrode 100 is connected to a radio-receiver which must be first tuned by the pupil. Alternatively, generator 38 may produce an audio-frequency and electrode 100 is then connected through an amplifier directly to earphones. The modulation of the opposite pairs of quadrants in accordance with the letters A, N is effected by a relay 126 controlled by a cam 70. The simulated equi-signal zones 27 may be shifted without changing the shape of the quadrants by adjustment of variable condensers 134. Irregularities in the equi-signal zones may be simulated by shaping the quadrants as at 152, Fig. 8, and an additional equi-signal line may be provided by a strip 150 mounted above one quadrant 28, but electrically connected to the adjacent quadrant 30. Specifications 370,128, [Group XXXIII]; 476,816; 481,375, 484,243, [both in Group XXXIII], 569,440 and 577,242 are referred to.
