Abstract
880,566. Testing radio-navigation systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. June 13, 1958 [June 18, 1957], No. 19004/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 40(7). A test set for radio navigational equipment comprises means for generating pulses simulating the signals transmitted by a beacon such as TACAN and for amplitude modulating the pulses to simulate the effect of a rotating antenna pattern. The following test facilities are provided. (1) Identity tone signals consisting of 1350 pairs of pulses per second the pulses of a pair being spaced by 100 Á.sec. (2) Main reference signals consisting of 12 pulses spaced by 30 Á.sec. and having a repetition frequency of 15 c.p.s. (3) Auxiliary reference signals consisting of 6 pulses spaced by 24 Á.sec. and having a repetition frequency of 135 c.p.s. (4) Reply signals consisting of suitably delayed interrogation pulses to simulate the distance between the test set and the (mobile) equipment which transmits the interrogation pulses. All of the above pulse signals are combined into a single pulse train and for each pulse of the latter a second pulse is generated spaced therefrom by 12 Á.sec. to enable single random-wise pulses to be differentiated therefrom. The composite train of pairs of pulses is then amplitude modulated by a complex wave having a fundamental frequency of 15 c.p.s. and a harmonic of 135 c.p.s. and transmitted on a U.H.F. carrier wave from an aerial having a fixed radiation pattern.
