Abstract
600,737. Self - contained supply systems. O'SHEI, W. E. Jan. 27, 1945, Nos. 2182 and 3660. [Class 38 (iv)] Variable-speed generators, with.-In apparatus for generating alternating current; particularly for a vehicle, an electric generator 1, Fig. 1, having means for producing both alternating and direct current is driven by a prime mover 2, which may also propel the vehicle, through a free-wheel coupling 3, the arrangement being such that for prime mover speeds above a predetermined value, the generator charges a battery 7 through a cutout 6 and also produces alternating current at terminals 8 to which is connected through a switch 10a the primary of a step-up transformer 10 supplying an A.C. load, comprising, for example, a fluorescent tube 9 and a radio receiver 9a, whilst at prime mover speeds below the predetermined value, the battery discharges to drive the generator as a motor and so maintain the A.C. supply to the transformer 10. A switch 11 in the battery circuit connects the battery directly to the generator and is coupled mechanically to the switch 10a in the A.C. supply circuit. In a modified arrangement, the generator itself does not produce A.C., but, instead, drives an interrupter whereby pulses of D.C. from the battery are supplied to the primary of a transformer, the secondary of which feeds the A.C. load. The head-lamps of the vehicle may be supplied with A.C. and the other lamps directly run from the battery.
