Abstract

755,049. Supply systems depending on variable speed generators; battery-charging systems; permanent magnet generators. BOSCH. GES., R. May 19, 1954 [May 20, 1953], No. 14654/54. Classes 35 and 38 (4). In electrical equipment for a motor cycle, comprising a permanent magnet A.C. generator 11 working in association with a battery 18 to supply lighting loads, such as head lamps 16, parking lamp 17 and tail lamp 19, the, or each, lighting winding of the generator is formed by two part-windings, such as 311, 312, connected together in anti-phase and feeding over separate half-wave rectifiers 12, 13. Winding part 312 and associated rectifier 12 are permanently connected to the battery through a choke 51 to provide for half-wave charging of the battery when a change-over switch 14 is set to position T, which corresponds to day travel. For night travel, the switch is moved to position N, in which the moving contact 40 connects together fixed contacts 43-47, thereby energizing the lamps 16, 19, short-circuiting the choke 51 and bringing into service the winding part 311 and associated rectifier 13, so that the battery is now charged at higher rate by fullwave rectification. In the parking position P of switch 14, the battery directly supplies lamps 17, 19. The generator may have another lighting winding comprising antiphase part windings 321, 322 connected, respectively, in parallel with the part windings 311, 312. The machine may also carry an ignition winding and may be of the form shown in Fig. 4, wherein fixed yokes 28-30, carrying, respectively, an ignition coil 25 and two-part lighting windings 31, 32, are equally spaced within a flywheel 24 having peripherally arranged pole-pieces 22 which alternate with permanent magnets 23. The flywheel also houses a contact-breaker 26 and condenser 27 for the ignition coil.
