Overcharging of a battery 19 from a vehicle alternator 10 is avoided by a thermal switch 18, 23 which disconnects some of the windings 11, 15 at a voltage determined by a Zener diode 22. The voltage from the remaining winding 16 is sufficient to maintain the switch 18 open.
