Abstract
600,680. Stuffing-boxes &c. ; piston packing. BURGER, F. E., and JARU, Ltd. Sept. 17, 1945, No. 23995. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] A bearing, oil-seal bush, &c. for a machine part comprises a one-piece split-ring 21 of hard springy material such as metallised graphite held constrained in an expanded or contracted condition, to press its sealing or bearing surface against the machine part, by a soft rubber &c. backing 16 bonded to the ring to form a unitary structure. The backing fills and seals the gap in the split-ring. A hard backing 17 of steel &c. may be bonded to the opposite face of the soft backing which over part of its width is spaced from the hard backing. Pressure around the machine part is equalized by tapering the split-ring radially towards the gap and may be equalized axially by tapering it in an axial direction. When more than one split-ring is used, the gaps are staggered and the soft backing may be provided with an endless V- shaped groove to increase its resilience. The split-ring may be grooved on its outer surface to receive a thin split-ring adapted to apply additional pressure to the main ring.
