Abstract
600,673. Heating strip metal by electromagnetic induction. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. June 14, 1945, No. 15104. Convention date, June 27,1944. [Class 39(iii)] A practical embodiment of the apparatus described in Specification 593,195 for heating metal strip comprises two field structures 49 movably mounted within a rectangular frame 25 on rollers 155. Lateral movement of the field structures is made by reversible motors 171 driving a worm-andnut gear within a gear box 175 to displace rods 177 slidably mounted in the wall of the gear box. The field structures are built up of U-shaped laminations 69 assembled into stacks 63 and clamped between a plurality of vertical frame bars 55 by bolts 77. A blower 113 circulates cooling air through ducts to slots 73 forming passages through the laminated poles and discharging between the end turns of the windings on the opposite side of the field structure. Each winding comprises two parallel coils of copper tube connected to bus bars 131, 135 and water tubes 139, 141, so that the water circulates through both coils of each winding in series while the current traverses the two coils of each winding in parallel, but due to the alternate connections to bus bars 131, 135 traverses two adjacent coils in series, producing alternate N. and S. poles vertically within the field structure; the water pipes may therefore be at earth potential.
