Abstract

165,936. Schroeder, G. April 1, 1920. Armatures and field magnets, cooling.-A cooling-arrangement for the core of an electrical machine comprises a circulating-system for a cooling-liquid consisting of longitudinal tubular parts inserted in the core and interconnecting end parts, the tubes and end connections being so disposed relatively to the magnetic flux that the sum of the electromotive forces induced in them is approximately zero in any complete circuit formed by the system. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the cooling-system comprises a series of pairs of tubes, the tubes c. d of each pair being placed close together and united at one end, the other ends being connected with the inlet and outlet chambers e, f. In a modification applicable to machines having more than one pair of poles, the tubes of each pair are separated by a distance equal to two pole-pitches. The tubes of one pair may be connected with the tubes of another pair, and the groups thus formed may be connected in series or parallel, giving a tube system analogous to a winding for half the number of poles. In another arrangement the tubes are arranged to resemble a closed armature winding having a fractional pitch as shown in Fig. 3, the pitch of the tube system being equal to half a pole-pitch. The tubes are preferably formed of a high-resistance metal or alloy and are separated from the core by a thin layer of insulating-material. The tubes may be made with a slight clearance in the ducts, and after being placed in position expanded by hydraulic or pneumatic pressure.
