Abstract

600,445. Frictional igniters. HARRIS, I. E. S. Dec. 31, 1945, Nos. 35300/45 and 24350/46. [Class 75(iii)] A lighter having a pivoted wick cover 16 which leaves the flint wheel 13 always exposed is provided with a flint chamber 36, Fig. 7, arranged alongside a flint barrel 18, and connected to it by a transfer passage 38. The flint 19 may be urged by a plunger unit 20 having a tubular holder 21, Fig. 3, for a spring 26 bearing against the closed end of a plunger 22, the plunger unit 20 being held in its normal position by a spring-loaded locking plunger 29 engaging in a groove 28 of the holder 21. The holder 21 may have a knob 27 adapted to be unscrewed to provide an additional groove for finer adjustment of a long flint, and the holder may also have a groove 40 adapted to be engaged by the locking plunger 29 when the unit 20 is withdrawn to allow a fresh flint to be fed into the barrel 18. The wall 41, Fig. 7, of the chamber 36 may be cylindrically curved so as to maintain the spare flints 39a parallel to the barrel 18 as they are rolled by gravity to be fed into the barrel, and an opening 47 may be provided to allow a worn flint to fall through. Alternatively, one side 32, Fig. 2, of the barrel 18 may project farther than the side 33 so that when the flint 19 is worn to a flake it may be ejected by rotating the flint wheel 13, or its operating roller, in the reverse direction to its normal working direction, and the chamber 36 may be provided with a window 37 bearing a mark 43, Fig. 2, coinciding with a mark 44 on the plunger 22 when the flint 19 is in a position where it may be ejected. The flints 39a may be urged upwardly by a spring, or they may be housed in a carrier 50, Fig. 9, adapted to be raised when the plunger unit 20 has been withdrawn so as to bring a new flint into line with the barrel, this flint being slid into position in the barrel by tilting the lighter and the carrier 50 being returned to its normal position to allow the plunger unit 20 to be replaced. According to the first Provisional Specification, the magazine may be tubular to hold the flints end to end, or where the flint barrel is supported on the top of the lighter, the normal support for the barrel may serve as the magazine for the flints. According to the second Provisional Specification, the flint barrel may terminate some distance from the wheel, and a separate support member may be provided to hold the flint until it is ejected by reverse rotation of the wheel.
