Abstract

A fine grain beryllium-copper base alloy capable of being cast and of being work-hardened on the surface in use and having a tensile strength comparable to that of steel, consists of: Cu 60-93 per cent, Be .10-11 per cent, Ni .55-7 per cent, Al 1-20 per cent, As .10-2 per cent. The alloy may contain Hg not exceeding .15 per cent and the As may be omitted when Hg is present. In making the alloy, pure copper is placed in the bottom of the melting pot, arsenic, if to be present, is placed on the copper, then copper-nickel shot, then more copper. Graphite is generally added, and heat is applied, slowly at first, to melt the mixture. Preheated beryllium-copper concentrate is then slowly added, the mixture being agitated when molten. The temperature is then allowed to drop to about 50 degrees C. over the freezing point of the melt. If no mercury is to be included, the aluminium is then added. If mercury is to be included, it is added in the form of an aluminium-mercury alloy formed by placing aluminium foil in contact with mercury for at least 24 hours. Before the aluminium-mercury alloy is melted, the temperature is preferably increased and held for a period to allow the mercury to act as a deoxidant, and to allow the escape of gases from the melt.
