[Class 89 (iii)] Modifications in a handtool for nailing as described in Specification 575,421 consist in providing the magazine with a tape of spaced nails from which the magazine is automatically refilled and a catch in the handle of the tool for locking the hammer in the cocked position. The nailpositioning jaws of the tool are pivoted and resilient. Fig. 7 shows the tape 100 carried by the drum 96 rotatably mounted in the carrier 95 which is secured under the body of the tool. The tape 100 passes round a wheel 83 having V-shaped teeth 91 adapted to grip the nails as the tape moves. A knife 105 strips the nails from the tape 100 and urges them into grooves 75 in a rotatable magazine 70. The wheel 83, which draws the tape 100 from the drum 96 and rotates the magazine 70, is provided with a ratchet wheel 82, Fig. 1, secured to it and rotating about the same centre. A bell-crank lever is moved by an arrangement similar to that described in Specification 575,421 for rotating the magazine. In order to fill the magazine originally, the hammer 35 is moved back by the trigger 14, and a catch 43 on the handle 11 engages with a hook 44 on the end of the hammer, retaining it in position until rotation of the knob 45 releases it by means of a leaf-spring 47 and cam surfaces 46, 49. A knob 84 secured to the axle of the feed wheel 83 allows the magazine 70 to be filled by rotating the feed wheel whilst the hammer is drawn back. The nail positioning means at the front of the tool comprises pivoted jaws 53 pressed together by a split spring sleeve 54 having lugs at the forward end which engage grooves in the jaws 53 and other lugs at the rear end of the tool. A guard 111 screwed on the barrel 10 of the tool protects the jaws 53 from damage when the tool is pressed hard against the work.
