1486863 Fastener driving tools; fastener grippers J B EBY 15 April 1975 15465/75 Headings B4C and B4W [Also in Division B3] A fastener holding attachment for fastener driving tools with elongate shanks, e.g. screwdrivers 12, Figs. 1, 2 and 74, Fig. 8 and hammer 136, Figs. 13, 14, having an anvil 124 on one end 120 for the axial driving of nails 132, comprises arcuate jaws 20, Fig. 2, pivotable relative to each other at bearing surfaces 42 at one end and having fastener engaging recesses, at the other, the jaws being controlled by means 24 including a sleeve 52 having camming surfaces 56 engaging inclined camming surfaces 28 on the jaws and spring-urged washer 50 engaging camming surfaces 48 on the ends of the jaws which are biased to the rearward position by spring 38 between internal jaw surfaces 36 and means, such as abutment collar 34 on mounting sleeve 22 which is used to mount the attachment on the tool shank via clamping arrangement 58, 64. The arrangement is such that, in the relaxed position (Fig. 2), cam surfaces 56 maintain the jaws closed, but on sliding sleeve 52 forwardly (Fig. 3, not shown) the surfaces 56 allow the jaws to open, springs 38, 46 are compressed and washer 50 cams the jaws to open, the jaws also being urged forwardly relatively to the tool shank so that a fastener head can be received by recesses 26. On releasing the sleeve 52 the jaws move slightly rearwardly (Fig. 4, not shown), the sleeve 52 more so and to a point where camming surfaces close the jaws on the fastener. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, mounting sleeve 22 is dispensed with; the attachment being fixed to the square-section tool shank by spring clip 76 which also serves as the abutment for spring 104. Camming washer 50 is replaced by a synthetic plastics plug 86 having camming surfaces 84 and the rear end of control sleeve 90 may have a square opening 102 to engage the tool shank so that the tool may be rotated by the sleeve. The camming surfaces 96 are provided on a removable plastics ring 94 screwed on to sleeve 90 to aid assembly. In Figs. 13, 14, the attachment is identical to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 except that the jaws have V-shaped grooves 114 to grip a nail shank 132. Tool shank 116, 120 has hammer head end 136 slidable thereon for imparting impacts to the shank and a handle portion 118. The attachment may be used with a screwdriver to hold and rotate nuts or bolts by having jaws modified with flat recesses.
