Abstract
599,402. Pianofortes. STAPELY, G. H. Sept. 17, 1945, No. 23926. Convention date, Sept. 25, 1944. [Class 88 (ii)] A piano has metal posts fitted to the back of the metal frame or plate and bearing against fulcrum means to counteract the tendency of the strings to bend the plate. In one form, a metal frame 10, Figs. 4a and 4b, carries the wrest plank 13, a wooden top rail 14 and bottom rail 15. The stiffening posts 18 are of T-section and have toes 18d engaging in recesses in the top rail while their lower ends are held by wedges 27 which are driven in and held by screws. The line of greatest distortion lies approximately three-quarters of the way up the frame and a form of fulcrum is provided at this point by a beam 23 extending the width of the frame behind the soundboard 11 and pressing against a recessed part 18c of the post 18. The posts may be additionally secured to the frame at other points below the fulcrum. In a modification, Figs. 7a, 7b (not shown), the wooden rails are not used and the wrest plank is clamped between the posts and frame. In this case the top and bottom of the posts are bolted to the frame and the lower edge of the wrest plank acts as the fulcrum.
