[Class 142 (iii)] A shuttle guard of the type which can be moved to an inoperative position against the action of a spring, returning automatically to its operative position when the loom is started, comprises a front rod B attached to a rear rod C, the ends of the latter being rotatable in end brackets E, F, secured to the slay cap A, the bracket E being fitted with a clutch member K which is engaged by one end of the rod B through the action of a spring L encircling the rod C. The clutch member K consists of a short tube through which the rod C passes, the tube being formed at one end with a projecting ledge and a locking groove. The rod C rests in a hook in a centre bracket G and a pin may project laterally from the rod C or from a spacing bar to pass beneath and bear against the underside of the bracket G to support the guard in its operative position. In a modification, the guard comprises two separate and independently-operated guards, and the clutches and springs are preferably arranged at the outer ends of the guards. According to the second Provisional Specification, the clutch members have ratchet teeth.
