597,638. Extruding powdered carbides &c. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 1, 1944, No. 14658. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1943. [Class 87 (ii)] Powdered materials, e.g., metal carbides mixed with starch, are prepared for extrusion by compressing them into compact masses within ring members 14. Each ring member, fitted with a screw-threaded cap 15 and a screwthreaded cylindrical extension 12, is filled with powder 10 which is compacted first by vibration then by compression under a disc 18 and plunger 22 until it exactly fills the ring 14. The disc has holes 20 and the plunger a spiral groove 24 communicating with vents 25 to allow escape of gases during compression. After compression the cap 15 and ring 12 are removed, perforated plates and felt gaskets held in position by screwthreaded rings are fitted to either side of the ring 14 and a water-glycerine solution applied to the compact, e.g., as described in Specification 544,974. Several rings 14 filled with plasticized powder are then assembled together by means of screw-threaded rings 32 and an extrusion die 33 secured to one end of the series. Pressure is applied through a plate 34.
