Abstract

597,626. Making flexible tubes. CHERNACK, A. E. May 11, 1938, No. 14096. [Class 99 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] In a machine for making a flexible tube, a helical wire coil 1 is fed to strip-winding mechanism by a device comprising a screw 31 arranged within the coil and having at two sections 31b, 31c threads of greater diameter than the coil, whereby it is mounted in bearings 6, 7. The screw is driven by a sprocket 9 on a sleeve 8 mounted in the bearing 7, and keyed at 34 to the threads 31c. The threads 31a engage the coil, but are of smaller diameter. The coil is prevented from rotating by grooved pulleys 3, 4, 5, the coil engaging in the grooves which may be rubber-lined. The pressure of the pulleys 4, 5 on the coil may be adjusted by screws 36. The coil is covered by a helically wound strip 11a of " Cellophane " (Registered Trade Mark), followed by a strip 10s of cotton cloth from reels mounted on the sleeve 8 and adhesive is applied to both sides of the " Cellophane " strip (see-Group VIII). The windings are pressed into the open coil by three pairs of rollers 12 carried by arms 8d, Fig. 6, to form a groove in which is wound a fine linen thread 37 tightened by passing it over rods 38. The groove is filled by a coarser thread 40. The tube is prevented from rotating by three loaded, grooved rollers 13. The tube is finally coated by passing it twice through a bath of rubber latex in a heated chamber, is passed through a talc dusting box and wound on to a drum.
