Abstract

597,559. Mine-supporting arches. JOHNSON'S IRON & STEEL CO., Ltd., BANKS, F. W. R., and WHISTON, H. Aug. 23, 1945, No. 21547. [Class 20(ii)] Mine-roof supports which comprise a series of spaced arches connected by tiemembers locked in slots in the arches, have the slots formed with a wide central part located between two narrower parts, whereby any individual tie may be taken out without removing the adjacent tie whose end is located in the same opening. The arch member 12, Fig. 1, of I-section is connected to adjacent arches by ties 16 whose ends are passed through a wide part 11, 13 of a slot in the web, one tie being passed into a narrow slot 15 and the other into an opposite slot 14, by means of recesses 17 in the ties. The ties are maintained in their respective slots by a wedge 18. The ties may be circular in section, the ends of the slots being shaped to correspond to the section of the ties.
