Abstract

597,388. Electrolysis of alkali metal chloride solutions. HIRSH, B. W., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 27,1941, No. 10912. [Class 41] In electrolysing an aqueous alkali metal chloride solution employing a cell having a flowing liquid metal cathode beneath a carbon anode formed with vents at intervals along the path of the electrolyte through which chlorine can escape, the solution iscaused to flow through the inter-electrode space at a high velocity such that large stationary bubbles of gas no longer collect on the undersurface of the anode. The critical velocity, which is of the order of 7.5 cms. per sec. is signalized by a drop in the operating voltage. Preferably the speed of the chloride solution is so adjusted in relation to the current density and the distance between successive gaps in the anode, that at no place in the inter-electrode space does the time average ratio of the volume of gas (measured at cell temperature) to the. volume of solution exceed 1 to 4 and preferably lies between 1 to 10 and 1 to 20. Suitable cells for carrying out the process are constructed so that the anode fills substantially the whole of the cell above the inter-electrode space. Specifications 597,389 and 597,440 are referred to.
