Abstract

764,068. Electrolysis. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd. Jan. 22, 1954 [Jan. 22, 1953], No. 2007/54. Class 41. In a method of electrolysing an electrolyte in a cell in which the electrodes are separated by alternating cationic and anionic diaphragms the voltage necessary to cause a current to flow is reduced by the continuous circulation between the two electrode compartments of a solution having lower discharge potentials than the solution being treated and a reaction at the cathode which is the reverse of the reaction at the anode. The electrodes may or may not take part in the reaction. Examples of solutions which may be circulated and the electrodes with which they may be used are copper sulphate or chloride with copper electrodes, silver nitrate with silver electrodes, nickel sulphate with nickel electrodes, potassium or sodium chloride with a silver anode and a silver chloride cathode or a mercury anode and a calomel cathode, caustic soda with mercury-sodium amalgam electrodes, and a mixture of ferrous and ferric salts with graphite electrodes. Specification 764,067 is referred to.
