Abstract

1382540 Electrolytic treatment of cyanidecontaining water STANLEY DENKI K K 29 June 1973 [29 June 1972] 30970/73 Heading C7B Waste water containing at least one cyanide e.g. from a cyanogen-zinc complex salt is treated by adding to the waste water having a pH greater than 10 a material which produces OCl<SP>-</SP> ion in solution, such as bleaching powder or NaOCl, electrolyzing it to produce cyanic acid so lowering the pH to less than 9 by the H<SP>+</SP> ions simultaneously produced, whereby a secondary reaction between the CNO<SP>-</SP> and OCl<SP>-</SP> ions occurs to produce N 2 and CO 2 . If the pH of the waste water is less than 10, NaOH, may be added to raise it to more than 10. The cell may comprise graphite electrodes: a central anode with two outer cathodes.
