Abstract

596,681. Watch cases. ELLIOTT BROS. (LONDON), Ltd., HARBEN, D. C., and FAIRBANKS, G. C. June 5, 1945, No. 14159. [Class 139] [Also in Groups XIX and XXXVI] A hermetically sealed casing for a meter &c. is produced by forcing two casing parts together to compress between them an elastic sealing means and engaging a locking member with one casing part to project into the path of the other casing part and to maintain the locking member in its operative condition on removal of the pressure on said sealing means. A cylindrical metal casing 1 is hermetically sealed by pressing a glass cover 3, bevelled on its outer edge, on the projecting surface of a sealing ring 4 engaged in a circumferentially extending groove 6 spaced inwardly from the open end of casing 1 and inserting a flexible locking wire 5 within a groove 7 of cross section substantially smaller than but parallel with groove 6 and nearer to the open end of casing 1 so that coincident with release of pressure on the glass cover 3 the bevelled edge thereof moves outwardly into tight engagement with the projecting part of locking wire 5. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), utilizing a fibre locking member in a non metallic cylindrical casing a glass cover bevelled on its inner side and inserted from the rear end of the casing moves inwardly when the pressure is removed.
