Abstract

596,587. Agglutinated fibrous materials. FLEMING, W. A. L., McPHAIL, N., and FIBREGLASS, Ltd. Dec. 22, 1944, Nos. 25808/44 and 10533/45. [Class 140] Fibrous mineral wool, such as glass, slag, or rock wool, is bonded with an agent consisting mainly of petroleum resin by application of a dispersion of the resin in water containing alkaline caseinate and excess of casein other than that required in the caseinate for emulsification purposes. A self-sustaining rigid, semirigid or flexible mass or bat, which is suitable for insulation in dwellings, is produced. The petroleum resin is heated and stirred into a solution of ammonium or other alkaline caseinate or the resin may first be dissolved in a solvent such as white spirit or paraffin and then emulsified. Preservative for the casein, fireproofing agents such as ammonium chloride and borax, and metallic driers such as cobalt naphthenate may be added. Preferably the aqueous dispersion is sprayed on to the fibres as they are deposited in a continuous matformation on a conveyer which then carries the mat under compressing means, such as a roller to reduce the mat to the desired thickness and through an oven where a blast of hot air dries the dispersion by evaporation and oxidation. Specification 550,833 is referred to.
