Abstract

Unfelted and unbroken waste cellulose fibers are individually clad with a non-flammable, finely divided and inexpensive inorganic material that is insoluble in water, preferably clay. The fibers are dampened with enough water to weaken the interfiber bonds, which are disengaged without breaking the fibers, and the unfelted fibres are mixed intimately with finely divided clay dispersed in the water. Surface tension of the water holds the clay on the damp fibers; and as the clad fibers are dried, the clay bonds securely to the fibers by hydrogen bonding to make them fire resistant. Sodium silicate is preferably coated on the clad fibers during the mixing step to improve the fire resistance in low density products. The clad fibers are preferably mixed with air before drying and can be formed into a resilient bat useful as insulation.
