Abstract

642,722. Heat and sound insulating fibre board; compound sheet materials. TURNER BROS. ASBESTOS CO., Ltd. Feb. 19, 1947, No. 4885. Drawings to Specification. [Classes 96 and 140] [Also in Group XIII] A heat and sound insulating sheet of bonded felted asbestos fibres, staple glass fibres or slag wool or a mixture of two or all of such fibres with or without the addition of mineral wool, the length of the fibres being at least “ inch, is formed with or profiled to have at one or both sides a plurality of separate and adjacent pocket-like cavities which may be up to ¥ inch in depth, and is produced by subjecting the felt, permeated with a solution of a heatresisting bonding medium which does not substantially decompose or melt up to 500‹ C., such that the felt contains approximately once to twice its own weight of liquid, to a profiling operation and to a drying and/or curing operation. The final product may contain 5-40 per cent of a bonding medium consisting of an alkali silicate or silicon ester in a suitable solvent, and may be further treated with zinc sulphate solution or an acid to reduce alkalinity and solubility of the bonding medium and further harden the sheet. A sheet may be faced with material of low conductivity or polished metal ; a number of sheets may be interleaved or faced with wood, bonded fibrous or woven sheet, plastics or metal-faced plywood. The facing sheets may be perforated to allow of sound absorption in the cavities of the felted fibre sheets.
