Abstract

1408175 Acrylonitrile polymer compositions MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 10 Nov 1972 [20 Nov 1971 (2) 3 Dec 1971] 51969/72 Heading C3P [Also in Division D2] An acrylic fibrous material, suitable for use in papermaking, consists of 50-80% of acrylonitrile polymer containing at least 85% of acrylonitrile and 20-50% of a C 1 to C 4 alkyl methacrylate polymer containing at least 80% of the ester. The material is prepared by spinning a dope of the polymers, drawing the filaments and then heating them in water or steam in a relaxed state at a temperature of from 75‹ C. to the softening temperature of the acrylic ester polymer. The filaments are cut into staple fibres and can then be formed into paper by conventional methods either alone or combined with other pulp materials. In examples the acrylonitrile polymer is acrylonitrile/vinyl acetate copolymer, acrylonitrile/vinyl pyridine copolymer, acrylonitrile/methyl acrylate copolymer or acrylonitrile/vinyl acetate/allyl alcohol copolymer and the ester polymer is a copolymer of methyl methacrylate with methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate or 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, or polymethyl methacrylate, the polymers being dissolved in dimethylacetamide or dimethyl formamide. These fibres are processed into paper optionally in combination with wood pulp and additives such as rosin size, fillers, aluminium sulphate, polyacrylamide, clay, terra alba and titanium oxide. The resultant sheets may be impregnated with polymers such as methylol melamine, unsaturated polyester resins, phenol-formaldehyde resin or nitrile/ butadiene rubber latex and the treated sheets may be embossed or laminated.
