Abstract

In apparatus for handling and working molten glass, e.g. an extrusion die, at least that part which is in contact with the glass is constructed of a material consisting of a compacted and sintered agglomerate of platinum or of an alloy thereof with up to 20 per cent of rhodium or of nickel, the materials to be agglomerated being initially in a finely divided condition. The agglomerate may also contain, uniformly distributed throughout it, from 0.01-10 per cent of a stable refractory oxide selected from the oxides of thorium, calcium, magnesium, strontium, beryllium, barium, zirconium, hafnium, aluminium, cerium, titanium, lanthanum, praseodymium, neodymium, illinium, samarium, europium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutecium, scandium, yttrium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum and chromium. The walls of extrusion die in accordance with the invention may consist of an agglomerate of about 80-99 per cent of platinum from 1-20 per cent of rhodium or nickel and 0.1-1 per cent of thorium oxide. Specifications 542,438, 575,998 and 578,956 are referred to.
