594,942. Rafts, pontoons and floating bridges. WALKER, D. W. R. March 9. 1944, No. 4392. Convention date, July 14, 1941. [Class 113 (i)] A raft, suitable for use in ships for life-saving purposes or as part of a floating bridge, pontoon or the like, comprises a main mat-like member of waterproof textile material which is of sufficient area to provide the main support of the raft, and is provided with stiffening means and with separately buoyant raised edges to prevent flooding. In the form shown, the mat comprises lower and upper tarpaulins 1, 2 stitched together and provided with eyelet holes 4. The single-thickness margin 3 of the larger lower tarpaulin 1 may be reinforced and is clipped or laced over waterproof buoyant bolsters 7. Stiffening is provided by flexible rustless steel strips or strong flexible bamboo rods 5 inserted in pockets 6a formed by strips 6 stitched to the tarpaulin 2. Each mat may be provided with a flooring of very strong lino or tough fibrous material, or with a timber road-forming surface as described in Specification 594,944, [Group X]. Two or more such mats may be joined together end-to-end by zip-fasteners or by laced water-tight joints as described in Specification 594,943, [Group VIII]. Specifications 253,472 and 323,663, [both in Class 113 (i)], also are referred to.
