Abstract
594,651. Compound transparent sheets; presses. ABBEY, A. (American Optical Co.). July 20, 1944, No. 13885. [Class 140] [Also in Group XX] Laminated sheets, prisms and lenses comprise one or more layers of rigid transparent material, such as glass, and one or more layers of non- frangible, self-bonding, synthetic resin material ; the layers are assembled between moulding surfaces when wet with water or other liquid which will not attack either layer, and then heated under pressure sufficient to remove the liquid and unite the lamination. Initially, the non-frangible layers may be dusted with a protective powder which is removed by the liquid. The non-frangible material may be polymerized vinyl acetate or chloride, partial polyvinyl acetal plasticised with non-solvent liquids such as triglycol di-hexoate and diethyl sebacate. Figs. IV and VIII illustrate two type of laminated lenses ; in Fig. IV, 1 and 3 are glass layers and 2 is the non-frangible synthetic resin layer, while, in Fig. VIII, the glass layer and non-frangible-like layer are 1 and 2 respectively. A moulding device is shown in Fig. IX in which the elements 19, 20 to be laminated are compressed between mould elements 7, 8 of which the fixed element 7 is supported by pillars 5 and the movable element 8 is carried by an hydraulic piston 13 displaceable against the action of springs 16. The moulding device is provided with heating elements 25.
