Abstract

594,568. Differential cages. TIMKENDETROIT AXLE CO. March 20, 1945, No. 6955. Convention date, Feb. 23, 1944. [Class 80(ii)] A differential cage member has an annular central web with a hollow boss extending from one side, a plurality of apertured bosses extending from the other side and integral gear teeth round its periphery. Two differential cage members 72, 74 recessed at their centres to receive side gears 116, 118 and having integral gear teeth 156, 158, are secured together by bolts 114 passing through mating bosses 94. The spider 104, carrying spherically located bevel gears 128, is located in apertures formed by mating semi-cylindrical recesses 102 in bosses 94. The cage members 72, 74 are journalled in bearings 140, 148 held in the main casing 8 by ring nuts 146, 154. A countershaft 28 journalled in bearings 30, 32 secured to the main casing by coverplates 46, 48, carries gears 40, 42 meshing with the crowned toothed spiral gears 156, 158. A spring detent 71 positions dog clutch 56, operated by servo mechanism 10, which transmits the drive from the shaft to the desired gear. The countershaft also carries hypoid bevel gear 26 meshing with pinion 16 integral with shaft 14. Bearings 23, 24 in the nose casing 10, which is studded to the main casing, carry shaft 14 which is splined to receive a universal joint member 20 on its front end.
