594,486. Supply systems for heating arcs ; high - frequency apparatus. BAGNALL, R. I., and FOSTER TRANSFORMERS & SWITCHGEAR, Ltd. May 7, 1945, No. 11559. [Class 38 (iv)] A high-frequency voltage superimposed on the arc voltage when the arc strikes between electrode 4 and workpiece 3 is produced by a resonant circuit 10, 11 inductively coupled by means of a series connected coupling coil 12 in the electrode supply circuit and which is connected across a spark-gap 9 in the secondary circuit of a transformer, the primary 8 of which is energized, when welding current flows, by the voltage developed across an adjustable regulating inductor 6 connected in series with the secondary of the low- or mains-frequency supply transformer 5. Adjustment of the regulating inductor 6 to vary the welding current effects a corresponding variation in the high-frequency voltage developed across the arc. In another arrangement, the inductor 11 of the resonant circuit is connected directly in the main supply to the electrode 4.
