Abstract

594,274. Clamps for joining structural frame members. COMINO, D. June 28, 1945, No. 16477. [Class 20(ii)] Frame members, e.g., tubes 8, 9, Fig. 3, are joined by clamping members each of which comprises a split body-part 1 having two flat square jaws 3, 4 the gap 2 between which is in line with the split, the jaws extending substantially tangentially to the bore in the body-part. Clamping members are secured by one or more bolts 10, the clamping action securing the frame members in the body-parts, and also the clamping members to each other. Shoulders 6, 7 are formed on the body-parts to receive the edges of the jaws of adjacent clamps. The inner face 12 of one jaw 4 lies approximately in the same plane as the axis of the body-part, whilst the plane of the outer face 13 of the outer jaw 3 lies slightly beyond the bore in the body-part. By this disposition of the jaw faces members 8, 9 may be coupled to cross each other, as in Fig. 3, or in the same plane, as in Fig. 1 according to the choice made of the meeting jaw faces. Various coupling arrangements are described. According to a modification, each clamping member may have an additional square tab on the body-part, disposed as shown at 14 on Fig. 6, the jaws of this clamping member being indicated at 4a, 3a on the Figure. By the association of clamping members 1, 1<1> without additional tabs, with the modified clamping member, three frame members 8, 9, 15 may be secured together mutually perpendicular to each other, as shown. Other applications of the clamping members to secure frame members in various dispositions are described. To secure clamping members other than at right-angles to each other, washers, which may be serrated, are inserted between the adjacent jaws.
