Abstract

594,013. Preventing starting when an engine member is removed. PESCARA, R. P. March 9, 1945, No. 5975. Convention date, June 30, 1943. [Class 7 (v)] In an engine which is started by admitting a charge of compressed gas to a chamber other than the combustion space, damage to the engine due to the starter being operated when a member of the engine such as a fuel injector has been removed is prevented by arranging that the removal of the member necessitates opening to atmosphere the duct which conveys starting gas to the engine. The Figure shows a free piston engine which is started by compressed air from a reservoir 5. The fuel injector 17 is so arranged that before it can be removed a connection 15 associated with the compressed air supply linefrom the reservoir has to be broken. When the connection is broken if the starting control is operated in error, the compressed air supply will escape and starting be prevented. The starting arrangement includes a chamber 5 and valve 7 controlled by a piston 11. The piston 11 carries a non-return valve 10. The compressed air from the supply pipe 12 enters the chamber 5 through the non-return valve. When a cock 9 in the supply pipe is turned to connect the pipe to the atmosphere the pressure in the chamber 5 operating on the piston 11 opens the valve 7 and the compressed air flows to the cylinder 4 of a compressor of the engine and operates the engine for starting. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that removal of the fuel injector can be arranged to interrupt the circuit of an electric starting motor. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
