Abstract

593,891. Spark - gap apparatus. COTTRELL, H. L. (Meaker, J. W.). June 19, 1945, No. 15638. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group VIII] The process for forming minute perforations in sheet material as described in Specification 558,834, in which a series of electrical arcs are made to penetrate the dielectric material is modified for dealing with certain materials of high dielectric strength such as leatherette, rubberized fabrics, compound fabrics or multiple plies of paper, by reducing the dielectric strength of the material at a plurality of spaced points by mechanically perforating or piercing the material prior to or substantially simultaneously with the electrical perforation. In one form of apparatus, Fig. 3, the mechanical piercing of a web S, is effected by a series of nine spaced discs 15 on a shaft 16 fitted with pointed pins 17 which form nine rows of incisions in the web S which passes to nine pairs of electric arc devices arranged across the web in three sets as 18, 18<1>, 27, 27<1>, 30, 30<1> and other sets not shown. Nine discs 15 are arranged side by side and one arc set registers with each disc 15. The arc devices are arranged in series and each series is energized by a secondary of a transformer. The primaries of the transformers are supplied by a common main. In a modification, Figs. 7 and 8, the arcs are produced by wheel-like electrodes 55, 56, 57, 58 on a shaft 35 co-operating with similar electrodes 43, 44, 45, 46 on an upper shaft 34, and pins 47 or other penetrating tools are fitted to the upper electrode. Alternate electrodes on both shafts are separated by conducting and insulating rings, so that the current can pass from one conductor 65 through one set of wheel-like conductors to a second conductor 66. The conductors 65, 66 are supplied with alternating current preferably from transformers I', II<1>, III<1>, IV<1>, V<1>, Fig. 7, which shows an arrangement in which are arranged five sets of wheel-like conductors. These are staggered to an extent equal to a fifth of the distance between each pair of conductors, so that rows of perforations close together are formed, indicated by reference numerals 70, 71, 72, 73 ... 79, Fig. 7.
