Abstract

593,674. Electron beam apparatus ; thermionic distributers. W E S T E R N ELECTRIC CO., Inc. June 22, 1945, No. 15973. Convention date, June 29, 1944. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] An electronic switch comprises a cathode 11, a grid 12, tray-shaped anodes 13a-j mounted on a circular arc concentric with the cathode, with a screen 14 having an aperture opposite each anode and magnetic polepieces 17 to provide a constant focusing field. Each anode is connected through a tap on windings 18a and 18b on a magnetic core 30 to the positive terminal of a battery, the negative terminal of which is connected to the cathode by way of ground. When an auxiliary coil 19 is energized from a pulsing circuit 21, the beam is deflected on to another anode, the direction and amplitude of deflection being dependent on the polarity and magnitude of the field due to the pulse. A circuit through the anode selected is completed and a field set up due to that part of the coil 18 energized, which is arranged to be of sufficient intensity to hold the beam on that anode in the absence of the pulse. A second pulse causes the beam to select another anode and the circuit completed again gives a field of intensity sufficient to hold the beam in that position.
