Abstract

592,874. Friction clutches. THELANDER, W. V. May 15, 1945, No. 12202. [Class 80(ii)] In a friction clutch plate of the type provided with two axially spaced annular friction facings 14, 15 supported by two radially projecting series of parallel but axially spaced tongues 10, 10<SP>1</SP>, arranged without overlap alternatively round the plate circumference and able to be compacted into substantially co-planar relationship, the tongues are formed of individual flat sheet metal stampings or other plate sections riveted or otherwise attached to the hub 8 of the clutch plate. As shown, the tongues 10, 10<SP>1</SP> are all identical and have outer portions 13 connected by flexible necks 18 to circumferentially elongated bases 12, which are secured to the housing 8 of a clutch hub of the kind disclosed in Specification 566,626 by rivets 9 passing through the mutually overlapping portions of adjacent bases. Flat leaf springs 21, centrally secured, by spot welds 22 or otherwise, to the tongues 10, overlap the adjacent tongues 10<SP>1</SP> on either side. The springs 21 are provided with arcuate clearance slots 24 for the inwardly projecting heads of friction facing securing rivets 16, 16<SP>1</SP>, and the rivets 9 have spacing washers 20, of approximately the same thickness as the springs 21, provided between the tongues 10, 101.
